Gerhard Kofler was born and raised in Girlan, right next to the winery he is managing since 2005. Earlier to that, he gained experience in Piedmont and Alto Adige before taking over the production of Cantina Girlan, together with his loyal assistant and oenologist Manfred Bernard.
Ever since, the production has been strictly trimmed to quality. No wonder, then, that the winery is now among the most awarded in the region, especially for its Pinot Noir wines. Gerhard is considered as a strong proponent of the single vineyard. In fact, his credo is getting out “the best” of each individual site, depending on its microclimatic condition. Consequently, Gerhard maintains a close and personal contact with Cantina Girlan’s 200 winegrowing families, striving continuously for improvements in quality.

Cantina Girlan was founded in 1923 in an ancient farmstead from the 16th century. Back then, 23 winegrowers laid the foundation stones of what was later to become the winery we see today. Today, about 200 greatly committed and motivated winegrowers and their families farm an area covering about 220 hectares of vineyards.

The main part of the grapes grows in Girlan between 450-500m a.s.l. on this morainic hill with volcanic porphyry (acid soils). Here, we grow our Pinot Bianco, Sauvignon, Chardonnay as well as Vernatsch in the cru Gschleier.
The other important origin of our wines is Mazon, considered as the most valuable cru for Italian Pinot Noir and home of big part of our Pinot Noirs. It is located 20 km south of Girlan, on 400m a.s.l. with calcareous and clayey soils and western exposure.

The grapes, entirely hand-harvested, are received according to a precise harvest calendar and gently processed according to their quality, variety and origin. Cantina Girlan produces three distinct wine lines:
